Howard Kellman Pitches
Vince Lombardi, the legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, was a great motivator. He said, "I will demand a commitment to excellence and to victory and that is what life is all about."
Star Athletes are known for their intensity. Yet one baseball great, Lt. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial, always was smiling. A reporter asked Musial about this and he replied, "If you had a lifetime batting average of .331, you would be smiling too."
Yankee great, Joe DiMaggio, was asked how he felt about being married to Marilyn Monroe. "It's got to be better than rooming with Joe Page," he said. DiMaggio was known for his all out effort all the time. He explained it this way, "There's always some kid out there watching me play for the first time or the last time. I owe him my best."
Most successful people set goals. Chuck Dressen, one of Warren Spahn's managers, said "All Spahn cares about is winning twenty games each season." Spahn achieved his goal thirteen times and is the most winning left-hander of all time with 363 victories.
Yogi Berra took a lot of abuse about his looks when he first joined the Yankees. His standard reply was "You don't hit with your face." He silenced his critics by winning three Most Valuable Player Awards and playing in fourteen World Series.
Larry Bird's work ethic was outstanding. He said, "Whenever I get ready to call it a day, I would think, no, somebody else is practicing."
Winning is the science of preparation. Preparation means leaving nothing left to chance. UCLA Basketball coach John Wooden did a twenty year study of what is the most important ingredient to winning basketball games. The answer: shot selection - not rebounding, as Wooden originally thought.
Positive thinking is useless unless it promotes positive action.
Mark Twain was asked about the secret to his success. "I was born excited," he said.
Life is a gift. Treasure it, make the most of it. Don't settle to be good. Be the very best that you can be.
Live each day as if it's your first day, your last day, and your only day.
